Original battelle

Beginning with a few machine shops and foundries that were critical to materials research for the U.S. iron and steel industries in the 1930s, Battelle now owns more than two million square feet of laboratories in several locations that perform cutting edge research in national security; environment, energy, and transportation; and health and life sciences.

gordon battelleOur company was born in the mind of a young man, Gordon Battelle, who did not live to see his vision realized, but believed in it so strongly that others continue to make it a reality. That vision was inspired by the conviction that science, technology, and the desire to “make inventions” could improve lives, could find solutions to make industry more competitive, and could change the world for the better. This rich legacy informs our decisions every day.

Today, we serve more than 800 federal, state, and local government agencies; some of the largest corporations in the world; and private sector customers and partners through offices in more than 100 national and international locations. With the national labs we manage or co-manage for the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Battelle oversees 20,000 staff members and conducts $5 billion in annual research and development.

We are committed to apply our management expertise, our science and technology assets, and our history of R&D success to deliver exceptional value to our customers and partners, establish research management excellence, and build strong education and community relationships wherever Battelle offices are found.
