The Bioremediation and Sustainable Environmental Technologies Symposium will incorporate topics beyond those addressed by its predecessor, the In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium. The Symposium’s new name and revised and expanded scope reflect bioremediation’s maturity and new directions in environmental research and application. The Symposium chairs and the steering committee are developing a program designed for scientists, engineers, regulators, site managers, and other environmental professionals, representing universities, government agencies, consultants, and R&D and service firms from around the world. Although bioremediation will continue to be a core area, the Symposium program also will consider how biological technologies and strategies can be employed to assess risks to human and ecological health and to develop sustainable practices in remediation, production, and other human activities. Abstracts are due November 15. To help support and encourage student participation, a student paper competition will again be offered, and several new features that will aid students in career planning are being planned. A new venue and dates will complement the fresh perspective afforded by the expanded scope.
Program Overview
Short courses will be offered on Monday, June 27; short course proposals should be submitted by October 15, 2010. The Exhibit Hall will open on Monday afternoon, and the plenary session will be conducted on Monday evening. The technical program, consisting of platform and poster sessions and panel discussions, will be conducted Tuesday through Thursday. New for the 2011 Symposium, “State of the Science” or “State of the Practice” platform presentations will be integrated into selected sessions to provide holistic perspectives. As the program develops, information will be added to this Web site, and the Preliminary Program brochure will be posted by January 31, 2011. It will provide details on the schedule, as well as a list of the platform and poster presentations in each session and descriptions of the short courses to be offered.

Venue and Dates
The 2011 Symposium will be held in a different city and at a different time of year than its predecessors. From the First Bioremediation Symposium (San Diego, April 1991) through the Tenth (Baltimore, May 2009), the cities selected were in large metropolitan areas on the East or West Coast, and the meeting was held in the spring. In contrast, the 2011 Symposium will be held in Reno, a smaller city set among the natural wonders and historic sites of the American West. Moving the Symposium to early summer reduces scheduling conflicts with academic calendars, as well as with the Annual General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and several other meetings that have been held in May in recent years. The headquarters hotel, the Peppermill Resort, will provide excellent meeting space and well-appointed guestrooms for a substantially lower standard group rate than the average at similar hotels in large cities. Many participants will find that the Symposium dates and scenic nature of the Reno/Lake Tahoe area will make it tempting to plan a few days of vacation.
