The Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nevada, will be the venue for the Eleventh International In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium. The dates of the meeting are June 27-30, 2011.

First held in 1991, the Bioremediation Symposium program integrates recent developments in risk assessment, fundamental research, and innovative engineering applications for both traditional and emerging contaminants. The Symposium offers a broad perspective on the performance and reliability of microbial-based processes for site restoration, waste treatment, pollution prevention, and environmental biotechnology worldwide.

The 2009 Symposium was attended by more than 700 scientists, engineers, regulators, remedia-tion site owners, and other environmental professionals, representing universities, government agencies, consultants, and R&D and service firms from 34 countries. Exhibits were provided by 61 organizations engaged in bioremediation or related activities. Seven short courses were offered. See the 2009 Final Program for an overview of the content of the technical program, which was made up of 400 platform and poster presentations and a panel discussion. The pro-gram presented the 39 specialized sessions and the panel in the 13 thematic blocks listed below, and the proceedings are structured accordingly.

  • Metals
  • Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Fuel Additives
  • PAHs and Chlorinated Phenols
  • DNAPL and Source Zones
  • PCBs, Dioxins, and Pesticides
  • Emerging Contaminants
  • Perchlorate and Explosive Compounds
  • Biological Treatment of Wastewater
  • Phytoremediation
  • Tools and Techniques for Assessing Bioremediation
  • Evaluating Sensitivity of Microbial Populations
  • Techniques for Enhancing Bioremediation
  • Site Management

The 2011 program will follow the same general structure, with revisions made as appropriate to reflect relevant new technologies and issues. Abstracts to be considered for the program will be due in August 2010; the Call for Abstracts will be available in print and at this site by June 2010. Battelle will organize and present the Symposium, and sponsors will include other organizations that are leaders in site remediation research and application.
