student09.jpgStudents are encouraged to attend and will find participation in the Conference a valuable part of their career development. The platform and poster presentations and the exhibits will provide useful information about the work of a wide range of organizations. To help make it possible for more students to attend, the student registration fee is half the standard rate. As an added feature, a Student Paper Competition is being conducted in conjunction with the Conference. The following information on the Competition is also available as a PDF.

Student papers are due November 30, 2009. The primary author of each winning paper will receive:

  • complimentary Conference registration
  • $1500 cash award to assist with travel costs
  • placement in the Conference program as a poster or platform presentation
  • invitation to the private reception for speakers and session chairs, to be held at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Sunday evening, May 23
  • a private networking lunch with the Conference chairs, steering committee members, and other noted environmental remediation professionals
  • award of commemorative plaque during the Plenary Session
  • name and presentation scheduling information on signs at the Conference
  • opportunity to include the paper in the Conference proceedings (A student may opt to exclude the paper from the proceedings; for example, he or she may prefer to submit it to a journal.)

The primary faculty advisor for each winning student also will receive a complimentary, nontransferable registration. The following organizations are sponsors of the Student Paper Competition.

Eligibility
The primary author must be a full-time student at the time the paper is submitted. Past winners of this competition are not eligible. Faculty advisors may be listed as coauthors, but the Conference presentation must be made by the primary author. A student who already has submitted an abstract to be considered for the Conference program may also submit a paper for the competition, on either the same or a different topic.

Scope and Review Criteria
All papers submitted by the due date will be reviewed by a committee of remediation experts. Review criteria will be originality of the research, technical approach, data interpretation, readability, and relevancy to the overall scope of the Conference. The program will deal with new or enhanced technologies/approaches for characterizing, treating, and monitoring chlorinated and other recalcitrant compounds in various environmental media. For examples of anticipated program topics, see the program scope.

Format
Papers that do not adhere to the following guidelines may be disqualified. The paper should be organized into the following sections: title, introduction, methods, results, conclusions, and references. To ensure objectivity in the review process, do not include author names and affiliations or an acknowledgments section; both sections can be added to the winning papers before they are published in the proceedings. Papers should not exceed 10 pages; the page count includes figures, tables, and references. Use 1½-space, 11-point type, and 1-inch margins.

Submission
Papers are to be submitted by November 30 as MS Word® documents via the file upload process. The upload screen requires the following data: the name, university, mailing address, and contact information (telephone, fax, e-mail) for the primary author of the manuscript; the title of the paper; and the complete author list. If the manuscript is on the same topic as an abstract that has been submitted to be considered for the Conference program, the title of the abstract and the name of the person who submitted it also will need to be entered. Receipt of each manuscript will be confirmed within one week of receipt. Authors of the winning papers and all other competition participants will be informed of the results in February 2010.
