Battelle Wins Contract for Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment

Battelle won a four-year, $8 million task-order contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Center for Environmental Assessment. Under this contact, Battelle will provide a broad range of proposal cover technical services covering the full environmental health risk assessment paradigm. Battelle services will include toxicological assessments of the adverse health effects associated with exposures to toxic substances (e.g., various chemicals and microorganisms), exposure assessments of the extent and duration of human and ecological contacts with these toxic substances in natural environments, and risk characterization where the potential for adverse effects in human and ecological populations resulting from this contact with toxic substances is quantified.

Battelle Wins EPA Technical Support Contract

Battelle’s Environmental Restoration Department (ERD) has been awarded a five-year U.S. Environmental proposal coverProtection Agency (EPA) task-order contract with a ceiling of $55 million. Under this Field Evaluation and Technical Support contract, Battelle will provide technical support to the EPA’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL). Dr. Bruce Alleman will be the Program Manager for this contract and Dr. Victor Magar will serve as Deputy Program Manager. Battelle’s subcontractors for this effort include the University of Cincinnati and TN & Associates. In addition to this contract vehicle, Battelle is a subcontractor to the University of Cincinnati on its recently awarded USEPA-NRMRL contract titled “Treatment and Control Technologies for Hazardous Waste and Oil Spills.”

Battelle Wins Two Contracts for Air Toxics Work

Battelle has been awarded a $450,000 two-year contract with the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium. Battelle’s Statistics and Data Analysis Systems and Atmospheric Science and Applied Technology (ASAT) Departments will conduct analyses of ambient air toxics data, providing critical information needed to develop a national ambient air toxics monitoring network. A team lead by the ASAT Department has also been awarded a $2.4 million contract with the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, funded jointly by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Under this three-year contract, Battelle will demonstrate a methodology for measuring emissions of Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) chemicals from DoD munitions activities, and apply the method to determine emission factors from munitions activities at DoD facilities. All federal facilities, including DoD, are required under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act to report TRI chemical emissions. Work is expected to commence in March 2001; Chet Spicer, Tony Wisbith and Mike Holdren will lead Battelle’s work efforts. Brookhaven National Laboratory (Art Sedlacek), the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center (Bill Bolt) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Indian Head (Randy Cramer) will provide crucial support.
