Oil and Gas Expert Joins Battelles Houston, Texas, Office
Battelle is pleased to announce Mr. Philip Beall has joined Battelles Coastal Resource and Environmental Management Product Line as a Senior Project Manager in the Oil and Gas sector. Based out of Battelles Houston, Texas office, Mr. Beall is assisting in the direction and expansion of Battelles oil and gas consulting services. Mr. Beall brings over 11 years domestic and international experience in environmental management, including environmental impact assessment (EIA) preparation, permitting, and site assessments of pipeline facilities, chemical and petrochemical complexes, remediation and environmental process design. Prior to joining Battelle, Mr. Beall prepared and finalized 12 EIAs for offshore seismic data acquisition and exploratory well activities offshore Trinidad and Brazil, prepared EIAs for two process plants (gas plant and gas to liquid plant) in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and assisted in the preparation of a Sanitary Protection Zone Development Plan for an international oil company in Kazakhstan. Expert Marine Ecologist Joins Battelles Carlsbad, Calif., Office
Battelle is pleased to welcome Mr. John Hardin to Battelles Carlsbad, Calif., office. Mr. Hardin joins Battelles Coastal Resource and Environmental Management Product Line as a Principal Research Scientist. In this role, Mr. Hardin is leading multi-disciplinary marine assessments and programs, as well as managing field sampling programs. He brings over 20 years of experience in marine ecological research, including sediment quality testing, physical oceanography, marine and freshwater bioassays, coral reef and kelp forest ecology, and fish collection and identification. Prior to joining Battelle, Mr. Hardin managed several major programs that included sediment quality investigations, dredge material permit certifications, NPDES discharge compliance, storm water monitoring, and emergency response to accidental discharges. He has extensive program management experience in directing environmental baseline surveys nationally and internationally for oil and gas companies in remote locations. Battelle Welcomes Senior Research Scientist to Its Southern California Office
Battelle welcomes Mr. Charles (Skip) Newton as Senior Research Scientist for Battelles Coastal Resource and Environmental Management operations in Carlsbad, California. In this role, Mr. Newton is responsible for the offices overall program, database management, and biological analysis for local, national, and international marine investigations. Mr. Newton brings over
23 years experience and expertise in the field of marine biology, including advanced training in aquatic toxicology and intertidal and benthic ecology. Mr. Newton has served as program manager, lead scientist, and database manager for several international oil and gas exploration programs, including oceanographic and meteorological field surveys for Shell and Chevron International. Locally, Mr. Newton serves as Program Manager for several U.S. Navy SPAWAR programs including the Sinkex deep ocean ecological risk assessment. In addition to his leadership and program experience, Mr. Newton has developed and constructed over 20 different devices for field and laboratory optimization and recording. He received a masters in biology/zoology/marine ecology from San Diego State University, and a bachelor’s in biology/zoology from California State University, Los Angeles. Mr. Newton can be

ETC2 Welcomes
The Environmental Technology Commercialization Center (ETC2) is pleased to announce the addition of Charolette Harris to the ETC2 team as technical market analyst. In this capacity, Ms. Harris is responsible for assessing the market potential of promising U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-developed technologies and developing market opportunity analyses that provide valuable information for both researchers and prospective industry partners.
Ms. Harris comes to ETC2 after eight years with the Polaroid Corporation, most recently as marketing development manager for the Cleveland, Ohio, Commercial Sales Division. She also worked for NCR Corporations Systemedia Division in Dayton, Ohio, and Sterling Drug Corporation in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ms. Harris holds a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Cincinnati and is currently a candidate for a master’s of business administration at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
In the ETC2 Cincinnati office, Heidi Tessitore has been promoted to the position of business information coordinator. Ms. Tessitore is responsible for building and sustaining systems that track the progress of cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) and licensing agreements between EPA researchers and industry partners. She is also responsible for developing information on EPA technologies available for commercialization.
Ms. Tessitore brings a strong background in accounting and information technology to the job and has proven herself a valuable asset to ETC2 operations. She attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the University of Cincinnati.

Hydroacoustic Expert Returns to Battelle
Gary E. Johnson, Fisheries Biologist, returns to Battelle as a Senior Research Scientist with expertise in endangered salmonids, hydroacoustics, and juvenile salmon migration. Mr. Johnson has over 18 years experience in using hydroacoustics to study fish passage at dams and has performed hydroacoustic evaluations at power plants across the nation. He served as a fisheries biologist for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) before being hired at Battelle in 1994, where his work focused on the prototype surface flow bypass at Lower Granite Dam.
Mr. Johnson will report to the Battelle Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) in Sequim, Washington, but for the first year, will be working at the Battle Ground, Washington, office in close collaboration with Battelle staff in Portland, Oregon, and Richland, Washington. Mr. Johnson earned a bachelors degree in marine biology and in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley and a masters degree in biological oceanography from Oregon State University.
