New Staff Add Capabilities to the Seattle Office
Battelle’s Coastal Resources, Environmental Management and
Safety (CREMS) Division is pleased to announce the addition of
nine recognized experts to its Seattle Office. The new group
focuses on water resources services adding significant
capabilities in water resources modeling, water and natural
resources management, and NEPA. The group brings strong
expertise in the management and evaluation of river, watershed
and coastal system processes through the application of
hydrologic, hydrodynamic, and hydraulic models. The business
areas they serve include dam and river system management,
hydroelectric project relicensing, watershed and coastal zone
management, stormwater management, water quality and
sediment transport evaluations. Several members of the group
also have in-depth experience in natural resources management
services ranging from large-scale landscape assessments for
forest health initiatives to wetland mitigation banking. Other
members have significant experience in the energy sector, with
services ranging from NPDES permitting support for refineries and
power plants to aesthetic evaluations of new transmission line and
pipeline developments.
We are pleased to announce the following individuals who have
joined the CREMS Seattle office at 4500 Sand Point Way, Seattle,
WA 98011:

and policy aspects of water resource
management and natural resource management throughout the
United States. Mr. Hanson can be reached at (206) 528-3050,
hansond@battelle.org.
Lon Hachmeister
Mr. Hachmeister, a physical oceanographer, has
devoted almost three decades to the fields of water
and natural resources studying marine, estuarine,
and riverine processes and the interaction between
biological systems and their surrounding physical
environments. His current areas of practice include
water basin planning, management and restoration;
coastal and estuarine process studies; and sustainable natural
resources management. Mr. Hachmeister can be reached at
(206) 528-3051, hachmeisterl@battelle.org.
Tarang Khangaonkar
Dr. Khangaonkar is a recognized expert in numerical
modeling studies related to water quality,
hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and fate and
transport analysis. He has 16 years’ experience
with various types of models capable of circulation,
toxics fate and transport, and water quality
kinetics. He leads and provides support to mixing
zone and dilution ratio studies providing modeling of
near-field and far-field mixing processes for a variety of industries and
government entities. Dr. Khangaonkar can be reached at
(206) 528-3053, khangaonkart@battelle.org.
Tom Martin
Mr. Martin is a registered civil engineer with
21 years’ experience in water resources
assessments within a watershed and ecosystem
management context. His areas of expertise are in
the fields of hydrology, hydraulics and water quality,
and in the practical applications of computer
modeling and environmental information systems.
He is highly experienced in ground and surface water interactions and
conjunctive use issues. Mr. Martin can be reached at (206) 528-3055,
martint@battelle.org.
Kirby Gilbert
Mr. Gilbert provides NEPA leadership and support,
project management, interdisciplinary team
coordination and strategic project services for a
variety of water, energy, and natural resource
projects. Through 19 years’ experience, Mr. Gilbert
has become well versed in coordinating
interdisciplinary teams in preparing environmental
impact statements (EIS), integrated natural resource plans, feasibility
studies, shoreline and coastal zone management plans, and pipeline
and hydroelectric licensing studies. Mr. Gilbert can be reached at
(206) 528-3054, gilbertk@battelle.org.
Zhaoqing Yang
Dr. Yang has 17 years’ experience in numerical
modeling of surface water hydrodynamics and
transport processes, as well as coastal physical
oceanography and data assimilation techniques. He
also has extensive experience in Computational
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, groundwater
modeling, river flood and management analysis, and
ocean engineering, such as nonlinear wave
dynamics and analysis of wave forcing on offshore structures. Dr. Yang
can be reached at (206) 528-3057, yangz@battelle.org.
Stephen Breithaupt
Dr. Breithaupt has 20 years’ experience with 12 years’
in modeling hydrodynamic, sediment, benthic, and
water column interactions. His overall experience
includes the modeling of estuarine wetlands,
sediment contaminants, reservoir forebays,
sediment transport, the fate and transport of
conventional and toxic pollutants in the water
column, as well as eutrophication constituents and flood events.
