Battelle-Led Conference Addresses Closing Contaminated Sites
The focus of the Third International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, sponsored and organized by Battelle, will be the innovative uses of technology to address the challenges of closing sites that have been contaminated with chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant compounds. Scientists, engineers, regulators, remediation site owners, and other environmental professionals from around the world will gather in Monterey, California, May 20-23, 2002 to discuss current work and future directions for research and application.
Chaired by Battelle scientists Arun R. Gavaskar and Abraham S. C. Chen, Ph. D., the conference has an impressive list of co–sponsoring and participating organizations, including government, academic, and private sector groups engaged in site remediation work. Presentations will cover technological advances in characterization, remediation, and monitoring of soil, sediments, fractured bedrock, groundwater, air, and surface water contaminated with chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant compounds.
The program emphasizes field applications, along with laboratory, pilot, and modeling studies that explore innovative remediation approaches. There will be numerous technical sessions, platform and poster presentations, panel discussions, and exhibits. A student paper competition is being conducted, and short courses will be offered. The opening plenary session features noted environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., whose keynote address is titled “A Contract with Our Future.”
