In a world of increasing threats and greater demands on the nation’s military capabilities, effective management of logistics support and weapons systems sustainment is vitally important. This new era requires genuine full-service technology life-cycle management, so that America can meet greater challenges in national security.

BSAM provides one-stop service—bringing together all the disciplines and experts needed to plan, procure, deploy, track, sustain, upgrade, and retire critical defense systems and their components.

Why Battelle?

BSAM Specialists Know These Defense Systems Inside and Out

Battelle has launched an initiative aimed at providing solutions in strategic asset management for the 21 st century. Known as Battelle Strategic Asset Management, or BSAM, this new business service is provided by teams of specialists, and captures all of the experience and advances Battelle has developed over years of working on critical defense systems with the Department of Defense, joint programs, and the service branches.

BSAM pools the in-depth subject matter expertise with proprietary technologies that have made Battelle a global leader in the generation, insertion and integration of leading-edge solutions for military logistics challenges, and also in upgrading and sustaining key components of mission-critical platforms. Finally, at the end of the life cycle, Battelle’s world-class environmental experts aid military clients in cost-effective management of aging defense systems through retirement and disposal.

No other organization can marshal this depth and breadth of scientific, technological and logistical muscle to tackle tough challenges in full life-cycle management of critical defense systems.

BSAM Logistics Solutions

Key capabilities in responding to today’s military logistics challenges include:

  • Real-time asset visibility, in transit and supply
  • Configuration management/technical data
  • End-to-end supply chain visibility
  • Conjunctivity with DoD logistics data systems
  • Flexible asset management and readiness reporting

Automatic Identification Technology (AIT)

AIT is a key part of BSAM’s smart solution for total asset visibility, materiel, and asset management and inventory control. This proprietary technology has three key components: an interrogator or reader; a transponder or tag; and a computer.

Electronic components in radio frequency identification (RFID) readers send and receive a signal to and from a tag that has been placed on the asset to be tracked.

The RFID tag is a custom-integrated circuit that controls the communication to the reader and stores data associated with the asset. No line of sight is required. Asset-specific data can be passed automatically to and from the asset management system to the RFID tag.

Recent examples of BSAM logistics solutions programs include:

  • In partnership with the Marine Corps Logistics Bases, Albany, GA, BSAM is helping to achieve total asset visibility, complete sustainment operations, and improved readiness of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense equipment at the Joint Services Single Site Storage Facility in Fort Worth, TX.
  • As part of the Consolidated Missile Asset Reuse for Targets Activity, BSAM conducts logistics-related research and analysis for the Missile Defense Agency’s Ballistic Missile Defense Targets Project Office in Huntsville, AL. At its Huntsville Operations center, Battelle conducts inventory management, task analysis, maintenance of diverse missile assets, and technical support of systems used in dynamic field test events.

Battelle Technology Insertion Initiative (BTII)

Another key offering of BSAM is Battelle’s innovation in continuous technology refreshment, an important aspect of today’s total life-cycle management for critical military systems and platforms.

Known as Battelle Technology Insertion Initiative (BTII), the approach begins with Battelle’s unique capability to invest up front to determine the validity of continuous technology refreshment for any given part or component.

The BTII difference begins with a sustainment profile, which includes historical cost data, sustainability demand history, and demand forecast. BTII experts then conduct an engineering evaluation for the part, and produce an estimate for the cost, schedule and performance of the technology solution.

This comprehensive evaluation is then presented to the requiring military agency for approval and a decision to proceed with documentation, validation of design and procurement. Battelle recovers its initial investment when the government procures the part.

Recent examples of the BTII approach in action have included:

  • Rebuild of the Black Hawk Caution Advisory Panel, which reduced weight, heat output and power demand while improving night vision compatibility and significantly reducing sustainment costs.
  • Replacement of the Avenger Display for improvement in reliability and usability at significantly lower sustainment cost.
  • Replacement of the Avenger Laser Range Finder for improvement in reliability and performance at significantly lower sustainment cost.
