![]() BATTELLE TO CONSULT WITH JAPAN CCS COMPANY ON CARBON CAPTURE, STORAGE
Release date: 16 July 2008
Battelle Energy Technology is one of the world’s leaders in the design and demonstration of carbon dioxide capture and storage, otherwise known as CCS. The technology is aimed at trumping global warming by grabbing CO2 as it escapes from its source—such as a coal burning power plant—and then compressing and storing it in places deep underground that have the correct geologic formations.
Now, Japan CCS Company Limited is tapping into Battelle Energy Technology’s knowledge base on CCS. A total of 25 Japanese companies have banded together to take the step from research to demonstration in that country and Battelle is cooperating with them in a consultant capacity. The members of Japan CCS include power companies (11), petroleum companies (5), engineering businesses (4), petroleum resource development companies (2), iron and steel manufacturing concerns (2) and a chemical company, all with expertise in specialized areas needed for CCS.
“The creation of this new company is an important step in the creation of a CCS industry, not only in Japan, but the world,” says Don McConnell, president of Battelle’s Energy Technology Global Business. “It points the way bringing together key partners with specialized skills in key aspects of the technology. Battelle is very pleased to by cooperating with JCCS Limited.”
The company’s mission will be to support the Japanese government, which has called for major reductions in CO2. It said this year that it aims to reduce by 60 to 80 percent Japan’s current CO2 emissions.
