Battelle West Jefferson Facility distributes checks to local agencies as part of its missions to be a good neighbor.

Columbus, OH—At Battelle, one of the hallmarks of the world’s largest non-profit independent research and development organizations is philanthropy.

Battelle’s liaison with the Madison County community that includes West Jefferson, where a Battelle laboratory complex is located, is Dr. Robert Casillas.  He is the Vice President and Manager of Battelle’s Biomedical Science and Technology Product Line,  Casillas says it’s one of his favorite parts of his job.   “Battelle employees live and work in West Jefferson and we owe it to the community to take care of them,” Casillas said.  “It is exactly what Gordon Battelle wanted us to do when he created our organization.”

Support of science, technology, engineering, and math education (STEM) is a special focus for Battelle, given its work in innovation and research.  Battelle is focused on early childhood preparation, K-12 programs that encourage curiosity in STEM careers, efforts that enhance teacher professional development experiences and programs that improve the general environment for innovative education reform.  While science and math are emphasized, a broader objective is preparing the next generation with the technical literacy that allows them to make informed choices and contributions to society.

Given that context, Casillas, on behalf of Battelle, made several donations and spent countless hours of his personal time over the summer improving the community and its educational resources.  Battelle distributed more than $24,000 in the area for school supplies, scholarships, and training.

Battelle is the world’s largest non-profit independent research and development organization, providing innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses:  Laboratory Management, National Security, Energy Technology, and Health and Life Sciences.  It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $4 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization.  Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle oversees 20,400 employees in more than 120 locations worldwide, including seven national laboratories which Battelle manages or co-manages for the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
