Battelle recently was selected to operate the Materials Management and Remediation (MMR) Center through August 2011 in an effort to accelerate the use of innovative technologies to improve environmental protection.

The center operates under the umbrella of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program. Under this cooperative agreement, Battelle will verify materials management technologies, including recycling, beneficial use of waste materials, recovery of useful components of waste, and treatment to minimize disposal requirements.

The MMR Center also will verify the performance of technologies that remediate contaminated land and ground water at properties where industrial or commercial activities have resulted in a legacy of hazardous materials that limit future use of the property.

The ETV Program provides opportunities for private companies to voluntarily participate in verification testing with the EPA, through cooperative agreements with private, non-profit research institutes like Battelle. Over 400 technologies have been verified to date through the ETV Program.

Battelle has operated the ETV Program’s Advanced Monitoring Systems Center since 1997 and also has considerable technical expertise in materials management and remediation technologies. “We look forward to leveraging Battelle’s extensive environmental management experience for this EPA program,” said Jeff Wadsworth, President and CEO of Battelle.
