Radiographic Imaging Center to provide an array of answers for clients
Columbus, Ohio—Battelle now has the expertise and equipment to offer complex, three-dimensional imaging to help investigate, analyze, or engineer materials at the microscopic level.
Opened February 6 at Battelle’s King Avenue headquarters, the Radiographic Imaging Center (RIC) is a state-of-the-art X-Ray facility when coupled with our technical depth and experience is capable of providing world class services.
The RIC can provide images ranging from simple two-dimensional radiograph to complex three-dimensional renderings with varying levels of transparency. Detailed cross-sectional views and surfaces can be exported to a three-dimensional computer aided drawing model in a short period of time. Such files then can be applied in a variety of modeling and rapid prototyping tools.
The RIC offers inspection capabilities, reverse imaging, quality control, and failure analysis. Small imperfections in manufactured metals, such as a cog or a gear, can be revealed that could indicate premature failure of the part.
Battelle has two pieces of X-ray computed tomography (CT) equipment to optimize image quality and analysis so that it meets customers’ specific needs.
The micro-focus system allows resolution details as small as 50 microns, or 0.002 inches. The RIC also can penetrate steel items as thick as one inch while still providing resolution of 250 microns, or 0.010 inches.
This system penetrates thicker/higher density objects as well. The system is capable of imaging items with up to 2.5 inches of steel and resolving items as small as 500 microns, or 0.020 inches. The RIC at Battelle can provide radiographic imaging of areas as large as 7 inches wide by 9.3 inches high.
For easy accessibility, the RIC also accepts on-line credit card payment (Online terms and conditions). It also allows Battelle to work with new clients who do not have a history of doing business with the world’s largest independent research and development organization because the RIC operates as a virtual storefront.
Battelle is the world’s largest non-profit independent research and development organization, providing innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management, National Security, Energy Technology, and Health and Life Sciences.
