Columbus, OH--The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) recently named Battelle the winner of its Golden Torch Award for Corporate Community Service. The award recognizes Battelle's investment in and advocacy for the African-American community.

"Battelle exhibits a determined, effective approach to neighborhood-building in the African American community and encourages and supports the pursuit of careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields among African-American students," says NSBE Executive Director Carl Mack. "Battelle exemplifies everything we work to honor through the Golden Torch Awards."

NSBE cited Battelle's long history of support for neighborhood development in announcing the award. For more than 75 years Battelle has invested in neighborhoods and communities by partnering with non-profit organizations including the Godman Guild, Habitat for Humanity, the Community Shelter Board, and the Center for Child and Family Advocacy. Battelle's efforts extend beyond its Central Ohio headquarters to areas nationwide where the science and technology company does business.

Mack also noted Battelle's commitment to improving educational opportunities and practices in STEM fields, including its participation in Metro High School in Columbus, formation of Battelle for Kids and the Battelle Center for Math and Science Education Policy, and numerous scholarship programs.

"The Golden Torch Award is a tremendous honor and one we are very proud to accept," says Carl Kohrt, Battelle President and CEO. "This is special because it comes from the National Society of Black Engineers. NSBE is the largest student-run organization in the world and one committed to improving opportunities for African-American students in areas that we at Battelle feel are vitally important. If NSBE feels our efforts in that area are worthy of this recognition, that tells me we are making a positive impact."
