Washington, D.C.—Battelle recently donated $1,500 to support the Bay Scallop Bowl, which is the New York Chapter of the National Ocean Science Bowl high school competition. Battelle staff has worked with the host, SUNY Stony Brook’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, since the competition’s inception eight years ago.

The Bay Scallop Bowl is a fast-paced Jeopardy-like contest for students focusing on marine sciences. It draws young students, graduate students, industry leaders, and government representatives for a weekend of contests and fun activities. The winning team hailed from Mt. Sinai High School on Long Island. Students on that team won $1,000 each and the team advanced to the Finals Competition in Washington, D.C.
Tom Gulbransen and Betsy Barrows, who work for Battelle’s Environmental Product Line in Stony Brook, note that Battelle’s support for the Science Bowl is a natural fit with Battelle’s overall support of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education initiatives. “The event makes it easy to get the message out that marine sciences and conservation are important,” said Gulbransen. “We really enjoy the opportunity to help grow the next generation of leaders in this field.”
