Columbus, OH-Battelle has joined forces with the Instituto Mexicano del Petrleo (IMP) to strengthen technology transfer and capacity building between Battelle and IMP in the areas of environment and safety.

Battelle has teamed with IMP since 1994 on environmental projects for PEMEX, the sixth largest petroleum producing company in the world. Together, they are providing strategic support to PEMEX as it moves to substantially increase its production of oil and natural gas.

The initial focus of planned technology transfer activities between IMP and Battelle will be on seven technologies including:

  • Environmental laboratory
  • Environmental forensics
  • Environmental information systems
  • Pipeline integrity and security systems
  • Environmental assessment
  • Emergency response systems
  • Remediation management

The new alliance motivates both companies to identify existing technologies or propose collaborative development of new technologies that are best suited to address the needs of PEMEX and other potential clients.

"We've enjoyed a productive relationship with IMP and look forward to tackling these tough problems that are facing Mexico and the United States. By joining forces we can bring solutions to these significant challenges," said Gabe Kovacs, Vice President and General Manager of Battelle's Energy and Environmental Market Sector.

"Our relationship with Battelle is an important element of our overall business strategy," said Alfonso Ramrez Lavin, chief of Staff of the IMP.

To support this effort, and to develop other business opportunities, Battelle recently established a wholly-owned subsidiary in Mexico and opened an office in Mexico City. Battelle Mexico is located in Colonia Nueva Anzures at Theirs Av. No. 20. Battelle and Battelle Mexico will continue its support of PEMEX while also pursuing business opportunities related to the sustainable development of the Gulf of Mexico, the economic development of the region, water and watershed management, the resolution of critical environmental problems along the border and elsewhere, and the overall strengthening of the Mexican energy sector to development of a stable, high-quality source of energy to support both U.S. and Mexican economic growth.
