BATTELLE WINS METROPOLITAN MEDICAL RESPONSE SYSTEM (MMRS)SUPPORT CONTRACT

Columbus, Ohio--The Department of Homeland Security announced recently that it has awarded the Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) Program Support contract to Battelle. The one-year-contract includes an option to extend services for up to four additional years.

The MMRS Program provides funding, program guidance, and information sharing to assist the country's 124 highly populated jurisdictions to achieve the enhanced capabilities necessary to respond to a mass casualty event. It is specifically designed to help a jurisdiction use its own resources during the first hours after a terrorist act caused by weapons of mass destruction. It does this by developing plans, conducting training and exercises, and acquiring pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment, detection and monitoring gear, and other materials.

This systematic approach requires linkages among first responders, medical treatment resources, public health, emergency management, public works, volunteer organizations, business and industry, and other local elements, to work together to develop the capability to reduce the mortality rates. It also requires planning integration with neighboring jurisdictions and state and federal agencies, and emphasizes enhanced mutual aid.

Battelle will support the MMRS National Program Office and the MMRS National Program Manager, Dennis Atwood, in seven key functions:

  • Assist in MMRS jurisdictional planning, training, equipping and exercising
  • Conduct activity tracking, analysis and reporting
  • Develop/maintain electronic library/data base
  • Conduct program and policy research, analysis, and options recommendations
  • Develop program information materials
  • Support conferences/workshops/meetings
  • Provide worldwide website management.

"We're looking forward to supporting this program which is so vital to protecting our cities and improving readiness in the face of a terrorist attack," said James Jackson, Vice President of Battelle's Homeland Security sector.

The Battelle team supporting this contract is part of the Battelle National Security Division and will work out of the Crystal City Systems Analysis and Engineering (SA&E) group.
