BATTELLE EMPLOYEE HONORED FOR VOLUNTEER EFFORTS

Aberdeen, MD--Battelle staff member David Love recently received a service award from the Maryland State Department of Education for his work at the 21st Century Community Learning Center in Aberdeen.

Love, a research scientist at Battelle, volunteers in the Saturday Bridges Program, a state program that brings at-risk children in for four-hour sessions on 16 Saturdays per year at Aberdeen Middle School. Love does presentations focusing on science to help cultivate student interest. He guides the group of about 20 kids though the research, investigation and experimental processes.

Love, an Aberdeen resident, said some of the more popular sessions have included making Silly Putty and an experiment involving soil.

"I'm happy to be recognized by the state Department of Education, but that's just a bonus," Love said. "I really enjoy working with children and teaching them how exciting science can be. Hopefully, we'll spark an interest that will lead some of them to choose a career in science or math."

Love, along with 20 other Battelle employees, is a member of the Big Brothers and Sisters Program which operates at Hall's Cross Roads Elementary School. He also volunteers for another mentoring program called SWAT (Student Weekend Assistant Team) in conjunction with the Jessie J. Shanks Masonic Lodge #137.
