As part of a
commitment to our neighbors, Battelle forms relationships
with citizens, business leaders, human services providers, public officials, and
educators to make Battelle communities great places to live, work, learn, and prosper.
Team Battelle, our volunteer initiative, supports hundreds of our staff in dozens of community service programs each year. And with the help of our staff's generous donations and Battelle's corporate gift, Columbus gives more to United Way, per capita, than any other city in the nation. In 1996, the National Society of Fund Raising Executives selected Battelle as its outstanding large corporation in Central Ohio. The society commended Battelle for its $1 million gift to the Ohio Center of Science and Industry to fund an interactive learning exhibit. Battelle's community involvement extends beyond Columbus to such places as our Oak Ridge, Tenn., office where volunteers conduct experiments at the Department of Energy's (DOE) annual Environmental Fair for sixth-graders. Capitalizing on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's experience in technology transfer, a team of Battelle, DOE, and government and business leaders developed a unique technology park that is stimulating the economies of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, Washington. In just five years, Tri-Cities Technology Park generated more than 80 new businesses that employ 7,500 people.
