Battelle provides health services research and program evaluations, health risk assessments,
health status and risk factor monitoring, and survey operations services. We establish
flexible client relationships that offer support, client-university-research center
collaboration, and full-service research. Battelle studies all populations, including
those historically under-represented. We integrate scientific research and survey
methodology, providing comprehensive research results and published reports. Battelle is contributing to the Women's Health Initiative, the largest prospective clinical trial and observational study ever conducted to examine the unique health concerns of women. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, this study evaluates the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy, dietary modification, and dietary supplementation with vitamin D and calcium for coronary disease, osteoporosis-related fractures, and cancer. Battelle recruits, screens, and schedules clinic visits for eligible women. To address reproductive health issues, Battelle is evaluating the effect of occupational exposures on risk of pre-term delivery, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and miscarriage. In this landmark study, we are collecting the natality and adverse reproductive outcome rates of 4,000 Air Force women, over a 20-year period, to provide a basis for new recommendations to public health policy. In order to gain new information on the causes of birth defects, evaluate factors already suspected, and develop new surveillance methods, Battelle is conducting several tasks for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For example, we helped implement a new and important case control component to an ongoing 24-year-long study. To address the continuing spread of AIDS, Battelle is evaluating the role of primary care providers in HIV/STD prevention for the National Institute of Mental Health. This program identifies provider characteristics and environmental factors affecting the likelihood of practitioners to assess HIV/STD risk and provide preventive counseling and diagnostic testing. Battelle is laying the groundwork for effective intervention strategies that increase practitioner provision of HIV/STD control services. In addition, Battelle supported the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a survey aimed at identifying behaviors that may decrease the transmission of HIV/STD among teenagers. Battelle is also conducting an epidemiologic assessment of the efficacy of back support belts for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Retail store employees are being studied to determine if the use of back belts in lifting merchandise will prevent first-time and recurrent low back injuries. |
