OUR POLICY
Battelle values human life above all else and strives to provide a workplace free of occupational injuries and illnesses. Battelle values the environment and strives to protect it, the public, and future generations from unacceptable risks resulting from its operations. Battelle fulfills these commitments through active identification, evaluation, prevention, and management of hazards and by striving to comply with the letter and spirit of all environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) laws and regulations.
Battelle management is responsible for providing an environment where work can be performed safely and where environmental, safety, and health concerns are readily brought forward without fear of reprisal or harassment of any form.
Management is responsible for implementing their applicable ES&H programs. Management controls occupational exposure to the extent reasonably feasible and provides training, personal protective equipment and occupational health services commensurate with staff members’ duties.
Management also provides a work environment that protects staff members, clients, contractors, and visitors from the health hazards of tobacco products by prohibiting their use on Battelle-owned property, in Battelle-leased facilities, and in Battelle-owned/leased vehicles.
Battelle staff members:
- Are accountable for planning and conducting their work in furtherance of this policy by knowing and following the most current safe and environmentally sound work practices and procedures
- Are responsible for integrating safety, conservation, pollution prevention, and waste minimization principles into their work activities
- Are accountable for working safely, protecting the safety and health of others, promptly reporting at-risk behaviors or conditions, and stopping work when observing imminent danger
- Are expected to notify their management or their component ES&H organization of any issues or concerns they may have related to health and safety practices and environmental issues, including the use or disposal of any hazardous materials
- May work alone only where the work is demonstrably safe, either by hazard analysis or other approved evaluation method.
