At Battelle, we believe the arts and social sciences are as important as mathematics and the physical sciences. They are intertwined, not mutually exclusive. STEM skills are not just important for people who want to pursue a career in research or technology. STEM skills underpin the intellectual vibrancy of a society. So how do STEM schools address the arts and humanities?

Language arts, social sciences and visual art classes are an important part of a STEM curriculum. Effective communication and expression of thoughts and ideas are critical in all aspirations. To prepare students for life, leadership and citizenship in a global society, STEM education helps students develop skills necessary to read, think and communicate critically about issues with local and global ramifications.

In addition to creative coursework, students are exposed to the arts and humanities through partnerships and programs that bring innovative ideas to school settings. One notable example is Battelle and Metro High School’s partnership with Shadowbox. In this creative project, students from Metro worked with the performing arts troupe to produce and perform in a caberet-style show, which they presented to family and friends. Another noteable arts collaboration involves Central Ohio STEM school teachers participation in an innovative training program with the Royal Shakespeare Company, “Stand Up for Shakespeare.”  The program trains teachers to expose their students to the works of the classic playwright not just through text but by getting on their feet.
