The International In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium integrates recent developments in risk assessment, fundamental research, and innovative engineering applications for both traditional and emerging contaminants. The Bioremediation Symposium offers a broad perspective on environmental biotechnology worldwide. Advances continue to improve the performance and reliability of microbial-based processes for site restoration, waste treatment, and pollution prevention. The Symposium is presented by Battelle, and several sponsors are contributing financial support.
When the first Symposium was held in 1991, bioremediation was an emerging discipline. The Symposium brought together an international assembly of researchers, engineers, and stakeholders from industry, academia, and government to help define and develop this new approach to environmental remediation. In subsequent Symposia, participants have reviewed and debated progress and introduced new concepts and recent advances in bioremediation tools, design, and management; the interaction of bioremediation with other remedial approaches; and global applications of bioremediation. Nearly 1,000 people attended the 2007 Symposium, and 500 platform talks and posters presented fundamental research and innovative engineering applications.
Overview of the 2009 Symposium
The Tenth Bioremediation Symposium, chaired by Arun Gavaskar, of Battelle, will be held at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Short courses will be held on Tuesday, May 5; exhibits will open and the plenary session will be held that evening. Platform and poster sessions will be conducted Wednesday through early afternoon Friday. In contrast, the schedule for previous Symposia was Sunday through Thursday afternoon. This change to a 3½-day program responds to suggestions made by a number of participants who have found it increasingly difficult to fit a 5-day conference into their schedules.
To be considered for placement in a platform or poster session, abstracts are due July 31, 2008. See the Technical Program Scope for an overview of the topics expected to be covered in the technical program. Short course proposals are due September 30.
As the program develops, additional information will be posted at this site. The Preliminary Program brochure will be available in January 2009.
