The Bioremediation and Sustainable Environmental Technologies Symposium will be held June 27-30, 2011 in Reno, Nevada. The 2011 Symposium will incorporate topics beyond those that were addressed by the In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium, held biennially from 1991 through 2009. See the Call for Abstracts for an overview of Symposium features. Abstracts are due on November 15, 2010.
The Symposium name and scope were revised in recognition of the maturation of bioremediation and to encompass new directions in environmental research and remediation. The Symposium will retain its emphasis on bioremediation, but it will also consider how biological technologies and strategies can be employed to assess risks to human and ecological health and to support the development of sustainable practices. The Symposium program will be designed for scientists, engineers, regulators, remediation site owners, and other environmental professionals, representing universities, government agencies, consultants, and R&D and service firms from around the world. To help support and encourage student participation, a student paper competition will again be offered, and several new features that will aid students in career planning are being planned.
Symposium Chairs Russell Sirabian and Heather Veith Rectanus, Ph.D., of Battelle, are working with a steering committee of noted environmental technology practitioners to develop a program that will help define the new directions of bioremediation and related technologies as we move towards more sustainable approaches to remediation, production, and other human activities. Committee members are contacting experts in the subject areas new to the Symposium and inviting their participation in the program, helping to insure a robust program. See the technical scope for the topics expected to be addressed by the 2011 program.

To complement the fresh perspective afforded by the expanded scope, the 2011 Symposium will be held in a different city and at a different time of year than its predecessors. From the First Bioremediation Symposium (San Diego, April 1991) through the Tenth (Baltimore, May 2009), the cities selected were in large metropolitan areas on the East or West Coast, and the meeting was held in the spring. In contrast, the 2011 Symposium will be held in Reno, a smaller city set among the natural wonders and historical sites of the American West. Moving the Symposium to early summer reduces scheduling conflicts with academic calendars, as well as with the Annual General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and several other meetings that have been held in May in recent years. Symposium participants will find that the Peppermill Resort has excellent meeting space and well-appointed guestrooms for a standard group rate that is substantially lower than the average at similar hotels in large cities.
