The Munitions Response and Operational Range Sustainability Conference is a new conference series being developed and organized by Battelle. The aim of the Conference is to promote the exchange of leading-edge technical information that supports (a) improving and enhancing cleanup processes and techniques used at former munitions sites and (b) practicing the environmental stewardship necessary to sustain the military’s ability to conduct realistic air, land, and sea training into the foreseeable future. Conference participants will be remedial project managers, range managers, regulators, researchers in private industry and universities, and other stakeholders concerned with converting munitions sites to other uses or with maintaining the effectiveness of active sites.

The 2010 CONFERENCE
The Conference will be held July 19–22, 2010, at the Peppermill Resort•Spa•Casino in Reno, Nevada. The theme is “Raising the Bar,” and the chairs will be Les Clarke and Jim Abbott, of Battelle. General Barry R. McCaffrey, USA (Ret.) will give the keynote address “Challenges to the Engineering Profession,” in which he will discuss the need for the U.S. to develop a strategic vision for modernizing the nation’s infrastructure.

SCOPE
rangehome.jpgThe scope of the Conference aligns with two programs of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) was established to manage the environmental, health and safety, and operational issues presented by unexploded ordnance (UXO), discarded military munitions (DMM), and munitions constituents (MC). The MMRP reflects the statutory program goals, enhances understanding of the nature of munitions response sites, and manages response activities more effectively. The Sustainable Range Management initiative is intended to ensure that operational ranges can be maintained at high levels of readiness to support testing and evaluation of weapon systems and training of armed forces personnel while protecting human health and the environment.
