Battelle has taken great strides in recent years to ensure staff members have a diverse environment in which to work.
Diversity is important to the business side of our company because it gives us an opportunity to create a competitive advantage. An equally, if not more, important role that diversity plays in our workplace is that it creates an inclusive environment that brings out the best in people.
As part of a continuing effort to offer diverse events to staff, Battelle invited Carl Mack to speak Jan. 23 at our Columbus location. Mack is the Executive Director of the National Society of Black Engineers. The presentation was in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. The focus of Mack’s presentation was King’s “Drum Major Instinct” speech. King referred to the drum major instinct as a need that some people have to feel superior.
It has been 40 years since King was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., but his words live on through presentations such as Mack’s. See for yourself how Mack addresses King’s legacy and whether the U.S. has achieved the equality for all that King sought.
