Battelle Welcomes
Dr. Walter H. Pearson returns to Battelle after three years in the United Arab Emirates, where he served as Head of the Marine Environmental Research Center and Acting Head of the Terrestrial Environmental Research Center in the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency. In this capacity, Dr. Pearson developed programs for sea turtles, dugong, fisheries, seagrasses, biodiversity inventories of protected areas, rehabilitation of select species, water quality, oil spill contingency planning, and natural resource damage assessment in the Arabian Gulf region. Dr. Pearson’s emphasis has been the study of the effects of pollution and human activities on marine and estuarine environments. Dr. Pearson has also led field and laboratory studies on the effects of six oil spills, including that of the Exxon Valdez. Dr. Pearson can be reached at (360) 681-3661 or Walter.Pearson@pnl.gov.
Mr. Greg Williams, fish ecologist, brings a strong background in fisheries, ecology, and restoration to Battelle. Mr. Williams has worked on wetland restoration projects, baseline monitoring studies, nearshore habitat studies, and various fish and invertebrate ecology programs. A member of Battelle’s Marine Science Laboratory dive team, he has 10 years’ experience as a research diver and has conducted numerous underwater surveys and field sampling efforts. His research has included the development of wetland habitat restoration criteria; fish and invertebrate habitat-use assessments; estimation of impacts of exotic species introductions; and the evaluation of species trends and anomalies during El Niño. Mr. Williams earned his master’s degree in fisheries biology from the University of Washington, School of Fisheries and Oceanography. Mr. Williams can be reached at (360) 681-3655 or Gregory.Williams@pnl.gov.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Nancy K. Wilson has joined Battelle. She is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, where she is associated with Battelle’s Environmental Technology Commercialization Center (ETC2) and with the human exposure research program of the Atmospheric Science and Applied Technology Department. Dr. Wilson is a physical chemist, with more than 30 years’ experience in environmental research, including analytical chemistry, spectroscopy and human exposure analysis. Most recently, Dr. Wilson served as Chief of the Human Exposure Research Branch at the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Exposure Research Laboratory. Dr. Wilson can be reached at (919) 544-3717 or wilsonk@battelle.org.
Battelle welcomes
Dr. Nadia Filliat-Junod to the Atmospheric Sciences and Applied Technology Department in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Filliat-Junod worked the previous five years at Battelle Geneva, Switzerland, and has joined the Columbus team to participate in a study designed to assess children’s exposure to persistent pesticides and other persistent organic pollutants. Dr. Filliat-Junod’s graduate work and subsequent work at Battelle Geneva focused on developing and testing analytical methods used to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from plant tissues. Dr. Filliat-Junod received her bachelor’s of science, master’s of science, and doctorate in chemistry from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Filliat-Junod can be reached at (614) 424-3038 or via e-mail at junod@battelle.org.
Battelle is pleased to announce that Ms. Sally Yozell has joined the Coastal Resources & Ecosystems Management Division as Vice President for Program Management and Development. Dr. Robert E. Hinchee, who played a key role in developing Battelle’s technical capabilities and market presence in bioremediation during the early 1990s, has returned to Battelle as a Senior Research Leader in the Environmental Restoration Department after a five-year absence. Dr. Hinchee is widely recognized throughout the world as a major figure in site remediation technology, with extensive experience developing and applying technology to assess and remediate contaminated sites. In his new position, Dr. Hinchee provides technical leadership in bioremediation and in situ remediation. He has developed and applied new technologies, including soil gas surveying, soil venting, in situ bioremediation, bioslurping, and TCE cometabolic bioremediation at more than 400 sites throughout Europe and the United States. He has also designed and evaluated groundwater pump-and-treat and soil treatment systems. In addition, he was responsible for the design and implementation of field demonstration in situ processes such as forced-air soil venting, enhanced bioreclamation, and in-place stabilization systems. Dr. Hinchee organized and chaired the International Symposia on In Situ and On-Site Bioreclamation in 1991, 1993, and 1995 and was the founding editor of Bioremediation Journal.
