Battelle Wins $3 Million DOE Advanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell Research Project
Battelle's long history of fuel cell research coupled
with its market analysis and commercialization
experience proved sufficient to receive a $3 million,
three-year research grant from the Department of
Energy. Battelle will analyze the technical and market
potential for the stationary application of proton
exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and to communicate
information to decision makers. Battelle's
approach includes:
- analysis of the technical, economic, market, and
policy factors impacting application of PEM fuel
cells;
- use of a proprietary scenario analysis approach to
facilitate expert future visioning;
- stakeholder involvement to ensure effective
dialogue and collaboration; and
- capture and dissemination of information.
Harry Stone, Principal Investigator, notes, "This
award provides an exciting opportunity to meld Battelle's
technical capabilities, market analysis, and policy expertise
to advance the U.S. role in this emerging energy
sector." For more information regarding Battelle's fuel
cell program, please contact Dr. Darrell Paul at

Battelle to Evaluate Arsenic Treatment Technologies
On July 9, 2003, Battelle was awarded a $4.8M Task
Order under the EPA Field Evaluation and Technical
Support (FEATS) contract, entitled "Demonstration of
Arsenic Removal Technology." This task order is part of
EPA's Arsenic Final Rule Implementation
Research Program to assist small
community water systems in
complying with the new arsenic
MCL of 10 micrograms per liter.
Under this task order, Battelle
will conduct a series of full-scale,
long-term, on-site demonstrations
of new arsenic-removal
technologies, process modifications,
and engineering approaches at
12 selected water treatment plants
throughout the U.S.
To perform its demonstration evaluations, Battelle will
acquire 12 arsenic removal systems from vendors who have
been selected by EPA to have their technologies evaluated
for effectiveness and ease of use at locations in smaller
municipalities and rural areas throughout the U.S. Battelle
will perform the engineering design and coordinate the
installation of the systems, followed by system shakedown
and startup. Battelle will then conduct one year of
system performance evaluations to determine their
reliability and cost-effectiveness for arsenic removal
and gauge ease of operation and maintenance and
required operator skills. Battelle will also prepare
reports on the technologies for
EPA; EPA will then present
these results to Congress as
required by Congressional
mandate.
This demonstration project
will be the first phase of a more extensive
program to follow over the next few years.
Battelle's Task Order Manager is
Dr. Abe Chen, P.E. of the Environmental
Restoration Department,
who is assisted by Deputy
Task Order Manager Lili Wang, PE. Both Dr. Chen
and Ms. Wang have provided R&D support to the
EPA's Arsenic Research Program and other arsenic
research projects since 1997.
For additional information, contact Dr. Abe Chen at
(614) 424-5641, wangl@battelle.org or Ms. Lili Wang at
(614) 424-7407, wangl@battelle.org.

Clarification:
The EarthVision model discussed in the winter 2003 issue of
Environmental Updates was generated to demonstrate the
capabilities of the software to hypothetically assist a complex
sediment remediation project. This demonstration model was not
contracted, used, or endorsed by the New Bedford Harbor, MA
Superfund Site project team.
