Battelle Welcomes Two to Edgewood Office

Rick Weiner, Chemical Corps Officer, U.S. Army, and Richard L. Kussman, an environmental engineer with the U.S. Army, have joined Battelle to serve as Program Managers for the Edgewood office.

With degrees in microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin and systems management from the University of Southern California, Rick Weiner has more than 26 years of military service. Mr. Weiner was the Commander of the U.S. Army Environmental Center (USAEC) in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, for two years. Other key assignments included the Director of Training at the U.S. Army Chemical School and the Commander, 2nd Chemical Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas.

As Commander, USAEC, Mr. Weiner directed the activities of environmental specialists in the support of the Army Headquarters, major commands, installations, soldiers, and their families. The Center is a leader in fulfilling the Army’s Environmental Vision of “Sustaining Readiness, Improving Soldiers’ Quality of Life, Strengthening Community Relationships and Providing Sound Stewardship of Resources.” Areas of expertise included preventing pollution, maintaining training areas while protecting natural resources, complying with environmental laws and regulations, cleaning and restoring contaminated areas, and sustaining the environmental ethic.

Richard L. Kussman, with more than 24 years of Army experience, is responsible for planning and managing environmental, safety, and occupational health projects. Specific projects involve response to bioterrorist events, environmental support to pollution prevention studies, and remediation of unexploded ordnance sites.

Prior to joining Battelle, Mr. Kussman completed a variety of key assignments at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. These include Director, Risk Management, U.S. Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command; Chief of Staff and later Director, Environmental Health Engineering, U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine; and Chief, Air Pollution Engineering Division, U.S. Army Environmental Hygiene Agency.

Mr. Kussman has a broad base of experience in environmental engineering projects involving problem analysis and resolution, Superfund sites, chemical warfare agents, health risk assessments, hazardous waste management, air quality, drinking water quality, and environmental compliance assessments. He received his bachelor and master’s of science degrees in civil engineering from the Kansas State University.
