Established: In 1991, Battelle acquired Survey Research Associates, Inc. (SRA) as part of the Statistics and Data Analysis Systems product line. A new product line, the Centers for Public Health Research and Evaluation (CPHRE), was established within three years and introduced several health research units. In
1997, when SRA was fully incorporated into Battelle, it brought these resources with it.

Staff: 40 permanent and 15 to 30 temporary staff.

Capabilities: Full-service survey operations include a 30-station call center and data collection via mail,
the Internet, personal interviews and biologic specimen collection. The human exposure assessment
laboratory facilitates tobacco control research. Other prime research areas include alcohol use
and network analysis.

Points of Pride: Studies contribute to understanding public health issues such as tobacco and alcohol use, injury prevention, autism, eye disease, mental health, aging, airline safety, women’s heath and HIV.

Good Deeds: Staff are involved with the Healing Shawl Circle, a group that knits and donates shawls to nursing home residents. Staff also hold holiday fundraisers for families in need. Sunshine Fund volunteers collect staff donations to purchase items for other staff members who’ve had a death in the family, a prolonged illness or other hardship.
