WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU
I’m really excited to announce a new partnership for Metro that will showcase another side of our talented students. The owners of Shadowbox, the sketch comedy & rock n’ roll club at Easton, proposed a show in their facility before an authentic audience. Our students will perform alongside their professional actors, singers and musicians!
And that’s not all… Shadowbox has enlisted Mills-James Productions to help film and edit the entire process of creating and executing this event into a documentary that will air on Time Warner Cable’s local on-demand station this summer. They gathered footage of the exciting announcement to the students a few weeks ago and interviewed me and several Metro staff and students to frame the setting for the documentary.

Dance auditions | More than 40 students signed up for auditions, which were held on April 7. Shadowbox brought in its professional performers to determine the level of skill in our students. It was a total blast! We had dance tryouts in one corner of the school, and various classrooms were set up for comedy, vocal and instrumental auditions. It was like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance and Rock Star INXS all over the building. They also interviewed potential lighting, sound, backstage, waitstaff and ushering candidates. The film crew was everywhere at once, capturing footage of the fun.
The cast of 27 students has been selected and the list was posted last week, all in front of the cameras. Rehearsals begin the week of April 27 after school. The day of the show, students will be at Shadowbox all day for dress rehearsal and final modifications.
The PG-13 show, entitled “Metro Rocks the ’Box” will be 7 p.m. on Monday, May 18. The show will sell out fast, so reservations should be made in advance. Tickets are $25 and are available through Julie Klein, Shadowbox Marketing Director at jklein@shadowboxcabaret.com. All ticket sales benefit Metro High School, so I hope everyone out there who loves a good laugh and a little rock and roll will come and support us. Shadowbox also offers a bistro-style menu and full bar. Food and drink are at additional cost.

Vocal auditions | In a school where we don’t have any music programs or performing arts, this is a really exciting event. During the vocal auditions, 2nd-year students Adam Swingle and Caroline Haimoff were sitting beside each other. Adam turned to Caroline and said, “isn’t it great to hear music in our school?” She said she was actually choked up right before having to do her a cappella solo audition… because she stopped to listen and heard the music from the dance tryouts and the band auditions. Both made the cut: Adam was cast in a lead vocal role, and Caroline has a comedy part. |

Diana Wolterman is on a special assignment at Metro High School, where she will play a key role in furthering the collaboration between the private sector and education, including special projects to connect Battelle staff with the activities in the school, assisting with tours and visits, developing and implementing new experience-based curriculum support, and helping to document the process of creating a new STEM-focused learning experience. Diana also will document Battelle’s successes and missteps at Metro to help the organization learn from the experience and make good decisions going forward at Metro and in other educational activities.
