ALL ABOUT ENERGY
Our students have always been very interested in issues concerning energy, which is why our school’s theme for the year is sustainability. We have been partnering with the Ohio Energy Project, an organization that empowers students to be educated leaders of an energy-responsible society. Its program includes training for high school students to enable them to pass what they learn on to younger students in workshops and Energy Fairs.
Twelve Metro students attended a regional Youth Energy Summit in November with our environmental science teacher, Dr. Bruening. They participated in interactive activities that combined major energy concepts with leadership, teamwork and presentation skills. They were given a packet of curriculum materials that include how to recreate the activities demonstrated in the workshop.

Molly and Roger demonstrate energy efficiency at the Energy Fair. |
In December, the students facilitated an Energy Fair on Otterbein’s campus for 250 fourth- through seventh-graders from around central Ohio. The full day program provided a variety of hands-on activities about the sources and forms of energy, transformation of energy, energy efficiency, light, heat and sound.
Our students enjoyed teaching the participants about energy awareness through fun and engaging demonstrations and they earned service learning credit for their sustainability projects through Advisory. For more information about the Ohio Energy Projects, visit www.ohioenergy.org.

Diana Wolterman is on a special assignment at Metro High School, where she will play a key role in furthering the collaboration between the private sector and education, including special projects to connect Battelle staff with the activities in the school, assisting with tours and visits, developing and implementing new experience-based curriculum support, and helping to document the process of creating a new STEM-focused learning experience. Diana also will document Battelle’s successes and missteps at Metro to help the organization learn from the experience and make good decisions going forward at Metro and in other educational activities.
