COOL SCHOOL

In January, Metro was chosen as a contender for the “Cool School of the Week” spotlight on Fox Channel 28’s morning show, Good Morning Columbus. The segment features two schools with similar profiles that compete for the title of Coolest School by receiving the most votes on the TV station’s Web site. Metro was the winner, thanks to the support from students, staff, parents and partners!

The Web site also provided a blog option for voters to express their opinions on why their choice was the coolest school. I loved reading through them and seeing some that mentioned Battelle as one of the reasons! Here are a few of the entries:

Metro is the coolest school ever! Metro has its way of providing the chance for EVERY student to succeed no matter what kind of learning abilities or disabilities each individual has. We all have the chance to start taking college course work for FREE our junior year if we meet all of the requirements and we have FUN doing it. Metro has 300 brilliant students this year and we all come together like family and we all know each other very well. Having 300 friends, amazing teachers and having fun while doing LOTS of work is the kind of high school I never thought I would be able to attend. Metro has already made a huge impact on my life and it will just keep making my life better. So I want to thank Metro and Mrs. Raymond (our principal), Battelle and Ohio State University (Metro’s partners), and the students that provide a great learning environment; all because it will change my future!

My high school is cool because it prepares the students better for college as a STEM school. Every student must get a 90% or above, and this makes the work more difficult than your regular high school. We have more opportunities than other high schools too, such as getting special tutoring from Battelle scientists and getting the opportunity to take college courses in the 3rd and 4th years. We students learn more than the typical high school student and still enjoy ourselves at the same time. I, personally, have a lot of fun and appreciate all that this school has to offer.

On January 22, the station came to Metro to do live feeds on the air. They broadcast Spanish skits, chemistry experiments, and interviewed students about various clubs and activities. This media exposure couldn’t have come at a better time since Metro is just finishing up our recruitment campaign for students for next year’s freshman class!

Diana Wolterman is on a special assignment at Metro High School, where she will play a key role in furthering the collaboration between the private sector and education, including special projects to connect Battelle staff with the activities in the school, assisting with tours and visits, developing and implementing new experience-based curriculum support, and helping to document the process of creating a new STEM-focused learning experience. Diana also will document Battelle’s successes and missteps at Metro to help the organization learn from the experience and make good decisions going forward at Metro and in other educational activities.
