I WORK IN A SCHOOL
I thought this place was pretty neat when I started working here last year. But I have a confession to make: It didn't really feel like a school to me then, but more like a brainy theme park-"Quizneyland" or something.
I saw a lot of hard work going on, but a lot of fun too. The building and classrooms were so different from my notion of what a school should look like. I guess it seemed strange that I could stand in the middle of the building and see everything that was going on.
Now that the new school year has begun and 200 students are here, it feels official. We have labs and hallways and so many more classrooms. Every day this week when I walked through to make a copy or find someone in another part of the building, I found myself thinking "Wow, we really made a school."
There's definitely a lot of learning going on here, but it's still fun. I wish they didn't make me do any work so I could sit in the classes that interest me! Chinese class looks really cool. Weird-looking things were going on in biology class today that I never figured out. Yesterday I watched a math presentation by students that I didn't quite understand. (Really, I didn't understand any of it!) These kids amaze me every day with the things they know.
What I'm trying to say is that while I enjoyed summertime, I really missed the students. They make this building a school.

Students experiment in the Metro biology lab.
