AWARDS AND REWARDS
We’ve been doing some celebrating at the school this year. Our students are seeing the results of their hard work and the rewards of taking chances and putting themselves “out there” for feedback, critique and competition.
The B2e STEM Club sent students to enter competitions at the National Society of Black Engineers Regional Conference in Madison, Wisc. We had three robotics teams that designed, built and programmed robots to perform a pre-determined mission, and gave presentations that described how they accomplished their project tasks. Our teams won first, second and third place— securing their spot for the national conference games in Orlando over Spring Break.
At the same NSBE conference, B2e also had two Try-Math-A-Lon teams competing in math skills tests and problem solving in both written forms and “game show” style panels. Our teams came in fourth and fifth, and will also be representing Metro in Orlando at the national conference.
Dylan and Yaroslav, first-year students on Metro’s Chess Club brought home a big, shiny trophy from a recent city tournament where they took 2nd place.
And very exciting news: a Metro student has won our first college scholarship!
Metro collected entry forms for scholarship essays in “Family Dollar” stores and every Language Arts student composed and submitted an entry.
Second-year student Oliver Knoell was recently notified that he was the recipient of one of 20 $2,500 national scholarships for his essay on the topic “Pursue Your Passion” in which he described what he believes drives a student to succeed in college.
We’ll keep encouraging our students to pursue their passions— both in the classroom and after school.
Oliver becomes Metro’s 1st scholarship winner

Diana Wolterman is on a two-year special assignment to Metro High School, where she will play a key role in furthering the collaboration between the private sector and education, including special projects to connect Battelle staff with the activities in the school, assisting with tours and visits, developing and implementing new experience-based curriculum support, and helping to document the process of creating a new STEM-focused learning experience. Diana also will document Battelle’s successes and missteps at Metro to help the organization learn from the experience and make good decisions going forward at Metro and in other educational activities
