THANK YOU, BATTELLE TUTORS
The Metro students had a little ceremony recently to honor some very special friends.
Throughout the year, several Team Battelle staff members (and even one wife of a staff member) have donated their time after school to tutor students struggling with their coursework.
You may not know this, but to receive credit in a class at Metro, they have to get an A. That's right-90 percent or better on every assignment! If they don't, they keep working on the assignment, take another test or do more projects in that subject until they have demonstrated that they've mastered it. The grading system is mastery or non-mastery. You get an A or you keep trying. It's that simple.
I know how much the tutoring is appreciated because whenever students give guest tours or do presentations on Metro life and are asked about the tough coursework, they never fail to mention the Battelle tutors who help them.
It makes me feel so proud and grateful to those who give their lunch hours or stay an extra hour after work to make up for the time they spend with our kids. To thank them, we decided to invite them to come in for a bit of our "royal treatment."
Each tutor was escorted on a personal tour with a student volunteer who had taken advantage of the tutoring services sometime this year. We wanted to show them the new wing under construction and answer any questions the tutors may have wanted to ask.
After the tours, we dismissed classes 10 minutes early and assembled in the open space. Each tutor was presented with an autographed class photo, and then we all had a Dairy Queen Dilly Bar. I'd learned the power of a well-timed Dilly Bar from my previous Battelle product line manager. (Thanks, Al!)
It was fun, and hopefully the tutors left knowing how much their patience and generosity has meant to this group of kids who have come a long way in the past nine months.
