MAKE MINE CHICKEN, POR FAVOR
Today is Chipotle Day. That's a big deal around here, I've found.
This is the second Chipotle Day since I started. The first time I was clueless and wound up going out for lunch. The new kid in school always misses out on the good stuff.
Chipotle Day means you don't have to eat the school lunch. It means you get to have whatever you want from the menu at Chipotle, brought in just the way you like it. Sounds good, right? Simple? Well …
There is one small catch. The Chipotle order has to be placed with Ms. Hogue, the Spanish teacher, the day before. Oh yeah … and your order must be written in Spanish.
You want a burrito? Fine. But do you want pollo or carne? Frijoles? Queso? Lechuga? Tomate? Crema? (That's beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream for those of us who have forgotten Spanish I.)
This Spanish class doesn't mess around.
According to Ms. Hogue, typical ninth-grade Spanish students may have trouble communicating with her students. Ask them to recite the old Spanish-class phrases and they may roll their eyes or just look at you blankly. Ask them what they did last weekend and they can go on and on about things that interest them and how they spend their time - in excellent Spanish.
They make Spanish podcasts about sports and hobbies. They do presentations in Spanish. And, at least on Chipotle Day, they order lunch in Spanish.
It's going to be pretty interesting next year when we add the Mandarin Chinese course.
I'm looking forward to lunches already!
