BIG DIG EXHIBITION DAY

On May 4, Metro hosted more than 60 guests for a huge show and tell. The National Coalition of Essential Schools selected our students to kick off their "National Exhibition Month" - one of four schools in the country to be featured in May.

The students presented preliminary findings on a real-world data statistics project, dubbed the "Big Dig" in which they are mining, analyzing and looking for trends and impacts in local educational systems, workforce and census data. Their client, the P-16 Council, will work with the students to develop a communication strategy to share the information with the community.

This project is spanning every course this trimester: Math for statistical analysis, language arts to write a white paper and pamphlet, science to use GIS (Geographic Information System) technology to graphically map out and show the distribution of the results within Franklin County, and Spanish to translate the reports and create a Spanish Web site.

We were so proud to watch the students present to educational and business professionals, researchers, professors and legislators. It was hard to remember they were 14- and 15-year-olds! The audiences provided feedback to each team on areas that needed more evidence and ways to improve their presentation skills.

A big thank you to the Battelle staff who came to participate! We'll soon be looking for more volunteers to assess end of year student mastery. Let me know if you are interested in participating.
