BATTELLE, HERE WE COME!
You may have spotted our students roaming the Battelle campus lately. In the past few weeks, they’ve had several opportunities to visit and participate in fun activities.
On Oct. 10, about 50 students from the Spanish classes attended the Hispanic Culture Celebration in the cafeteria to share their knowledge of bullfighting, gangs in Mexico, Latin artists and the Aztec and Inca empires.
Career Shadowing Day was Oct.19 at Metro, and all of our students were in the workplace, exploring careers they are interested in with professionals. Many Metro students visited Battelle and shadowed engineers, designers and graphic artists.
Tour days for our Social Studies classes with Battelle’s Stacey Durst and Jean Hayward were Oct. 18 and 23. As part of their coursework on the Industrial Revolution and the impact of technology in America, our students are reading Science in the Service of Mankind, a book on the story of Battelle, and the tours gave them a historical perspective on innovation at Battelle and beyond.
Last week you may have seen the B2e Club Robotics Competition in the cafeteria competing for a chance to travel to Madison, Wisc. next month for the regional National Society of Black Engineers Pre-College Initiative competition. We’ll be sending robot design and “Try-Math-A-Lon” teams to compete.
The students appreciated the support from Battelle staff at the event, and thank those of you who bought cookies at the bake sale to help cover their travel expenses!

Diana Wolterman is on a two-year special assignment to Metro High School, where she will play a key role in furthering the collaboration between the private sector and education, including special projects to connect Battelle staff with the activities in the school, assisting with tours and visits, developing and implementing new experience-based curriculum support, and helping to document the process of creating a new STEM-focused learning experience. Diana also will document Battelle’s successes and missteps at Metro to help the organization learn from the experience and make good decisions going forward at Metro and in other educational activities.
