JANUARY 31, 2001 BATTELLE TO BRING LOTTERY SECURITY EXPERIENCE TO ENSURING VOTING MACHINE ACCURACY
Battelle is jumping into what is shaping up to be a large movement to create uniform voting technology in states throughout the country. Battelle is taking the expertise developed and honed while working on the nation's lottery systems and applying it to voting systems. To a great extent, if you take out the word lottery and insert the word voting, the challenges and skills problems are the same. These include:
Battelle began consulting work with state lottery systems in 1977. Since then, Battelle has served lotteries around the world including 26 lottery jurisdictions in the United States and international lotteries in Canada, Israel, Puerto Rico and Trinidad-Tobago. Battelle wants to parlay its extensive history of bringing reliable standards to lottery systems to creating more accurate and uniform voting technologies. Battelle does not work for vendors; rather it provides services for jurisdictions responsible for the integrity of the lottery systems. Because of this, Battelle can maintain an unbiased, objective position that allows it to act as the honest broker for lottery organizations. "Our work with lottery systems translates directly to the system procurement needs of voting jurisdictions at all levels," said Jeff Stewart, program manager for Battelle's Government Market Sector. "This past experience, we believe, uniquely positions us to assist governmental agencies as they address this issue of national importance." Battelle serves industry and government in the areas of technology development, laboratory management, and technology commercialization. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle has operations at more than 70 locations and clients in 30 countries. It counts as its successes the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on the compact disc, medical technology breakthroughs, and fiber optic advancements for telecommunications.
