BOARD OF DIRECTORS SELECTS CARL F. KOHRT TO BE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF BATTELLE

Carl F. Kohrt, former Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Kodak, has been named the next President and CEO of Battelle. Kohrt will succeed Douglas E. Olesen, who retires later this year.

The selection was finalized today at the quarterly meeting of the technology organization's Board of Directors and is effective October 15, 2001.

Kohrt, 57, joins Battelle after a distinguished 29-year career at Kodak in Rochester, New York. He served in numerous senior executive, international, and technical positions throughout his Kodak career - including Executive Vice President and Assistant Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Vice President and General Manager of the Health Sciences Division, Director of the Photographic R&D Laboratories, R&D Manager, Project Manager, and Research Scientist. Kohrt retired from Kodak in July 2000.

"Carl Kohrt is an outstanding choice to lead Battelle into the future," said John B. McCoy, Chairman of the Battelle Board of Directors. "He has a great blend of science and technology, business, R&D management, and commercialization skills. In addition, he has vast experience across commercial and government markets and a strong track record of bringing breakthrough products and solutions to the marketplace."

"We're very pleased to attract a leader of Carl Kohrt's caliber to Battelle," added Doug Olesen. "Carl is a technology and product innovator with tremendous business and global marketplace experience, a people-oriented management style, and a strong community commitment. His knowledge of how to get technology and products to the marketplace will help advance Battelle's agenda to be even more commercial and entrepreneurial in the future."

"It's a great honor to be asked to lead one of the premier technology and R&D organizations in the world," said Kohrt. "Battelle has a long history of innovation and successful application of technology across many fields to solve important national and international problems and generate value for its customers."

Some of Kohrt's career accomplishments include -

  • The discovery or commercialization of entirely new color imaging systems, several of which still serve as the basis for current products in the marketplace.
  • Outstanding leadership of the Kodak Photographic R&D Laboratories, with 4,000 technical personnel on four continents.
  • A revamping of the intellectual property process that helped Kodak become the leading Fortune 500 company in terms of the number of U. S. patents issued per R&D dollar spent.
  • As Chief Technology Officer, the transformation of R&D from a functional organization to one aligned with specific market-oriented portfolios and the entry into digital and networked businesses.
  • Innovative management of the Kodak Health Sciences Division - a market leader in diagnostic imaging materials and systems.
  • Development and leadership of the Corporate Diversity Council to provide strategies and policies for increasing the representation of diverse constituencies to all regions and to all levels within the corporation. This included service as the Corporate Champion for Women.
  • Led significant business initiatives in Asian markets - including major acquisitions and marketing investments in China that helped make Kodak the market leader and China Kodak's second largest market for consumer film.

Kohrt received his B.S. in Chemistry from Furman University and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago and received an M.M.S. in Management Science from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kohrt has been married to his wife Lynne for 38 years and has three sons.
