Battelle is helping manufacture the U.S. military's latest defensive tool against biological attacks. The Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS), is being developed and manufactured by Intellitec and Battelle. Systems are currently deployed by the United States as part of its homeland defense initiative. The Department of Defense, through its Joint Program Office for Biological Detection, has contracted to purchase additional systems. The initial funding for this effort is approximately $23 million. "We've been working for a number of years to develop a reliable, effective and transportable biodefense unit that could be used by all branches of the military," said Bill Altman, program manager for Battelle's JBPDS program. "We've received great feedback from users of this system that has allowed us to improve the system performance and operation to meet their needs." The device is designed to withstand rugged environments, and be easy to set up and use by military personnel. It provides automatic detection and identification of biological warfare agents in the air. "JBPDS is the latest success in a long and diverse history Battelle has of providing innovative technology for our national defense," said Steve Kelly, VP and General Manager of Battelle's Defense Systems sector. Intellitec is a division of Advanced Technical Products, an industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of biological and chemical detection and protection systems.
