More than 130 Battelle scientists and researchers walked away from a banquet at the Columbus Zoo Friday with such items as financial rewards, plaques or kudos from colleagues and Battelle chief Carl Kohrt in recognition of their science and technology achievements.
The smiles on their faces could have come from either the antics of Jack Hanna, Zoo Director Emeritus, who entertained the group with an entourage of animals, or from their share of the $378,000 in checks handed out, a result of royalties and equity payments from Battelle inventions. The 132 staff members, who attended the 26th annual Commercialization Banquet with their spouses, were honored at the event, which had a theme of "Innovation from A to Zoo."
"We're here to recognize these scientists, engineers and support staff whose projects served industry and government, advanced our national interests, helped solve major societal problems, and gave birth to new commercial opportunities," said CEO Carl Kohrt, attending his first Commercialization Banquet after starting at Battelle in October. Staff members were recognized for their achievements in several categories including:
In addition, Steve Miller, a scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which has been managed by Battelle for the Department of Energy for 36 years, was named Inventor of the Year for his career achievements.
