Charles E. Wilhelm, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, has joined Battelle, one of the world's largest independent, nonprofit research and development organizations.
As Vice President and Director of Battelle's Office of Homeland Security, Wilhelm will be responsible for homeland security issues within Battelle's Government Market Sectors. Currently, Battelle has more than 2,200 government contracts in addition to 1,500 contracts with commercial and industrial clients.
Wilhelm, 61, retired recently after a distinguished 38-year career. In his final military assignment, he served as Commander of the United States Southern Command where he was responsible for all U.S. military activities with the 32 nations of the Caribbean and Central and South America.
A career infantry officer and a veteran of combat operations in Vietnam, Lebanon, the Persian Gulf and Somalia, Wilhelm commanded Marine units at every level, from Rifle Platoon and Company Commander in Vietnam to Commander of the II Marine Expeditionary Force and all Marine forces in the Atlantic, Europe and South America.
Wilhelm is a graduate of Florida Southern College and holds a Master of Science degree from Salve Regina College. He is an honor graduate of the Army Infantry Officer's Advance Course and graduated with highest distinction from the Naval War College.
Wilhelm is based at Battelle's Crystal City, Virginia, office.
