Battelle is part of a team that has been awarded an $8 million grant from Ohio's Third Frontier Program to help in the battle against lung cancer.
The team, consisting of doctors and researchers from The Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center, Battelle, Zivena, Inc., and Siemens Medical Solutions, accepted the grant from Gov. Bob Taft Oct. 28.
The award also drew a commitment of an additional $13.5 million in commercial investment from the partners, bringing funding to a total of $21.5 million. The research will focus on efforts to improve prevention, detection, and treatment for lung cancer.
Battelle is participating through direct investments and contributions of technology. "Our rationale for doing this is very simple," said Richard Rosen, Senior Vice-President for Battelle's Life Sciences Division. "Our mission is translating scientific discovery into practical applications that are important to society and our economy. Waging battle on lung cancer through more effective diagnosis and treatment clearly meets those criteria," Rosen said.
Another partner in the program is Zivena, Inc., an offshoot of the successful, Columbus based BattellePharma, which was spun off from Battelle in 2000. Zivena is developing proprietary drugs for treating lung cancer. Zivena's lead product, Resmycin™, is in Phase II clinical testing. The two Phase II clinical trials are being led by The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"Battelle is excited to see such a development in our ongoing partnership with The Ohio State University," said Carl Kohrt, Battelle President and CEO. "This is a great example of what can result by combining our two powerhouse research and technology development capabilities."
Part of Battelle's contribution is a recently developed Rare Cell Detection (RCD) system that enables counting of tumor cells in the blood. Part of the ongoing research will be developing the RCD technology to provide monitoring, staging and screening for cancer in a simple manner, not previously commercially achievable. This technology won a 2003 R&D 100 Award for being one of the 100 most technologically significant products of the past year.
Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. It develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for government and commercial customers. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle and the national labs it manages or co-manages have 16,000 staff members and conduct more than $2.7 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations include the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on the compact disc, and medical technology advancements.
