Columbus, OH- Battelle announced today that Bill Madia, Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the past three years, will leave Oak Ridge and return to Battelle's world headquarters in Columbus as Executive Vice President of Laboratory Operations. Battelle and the University of Tennessee operate ORNL for the Department of Energy.
In this key leadership position, Madia will be responsible for several major parts of Battelle's global science and technology enterprise, including:
"We are extremely proud of Bill Madia's numerous accomplishments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory," said Battelle President and CEO Carl Kohrt. "He led the Laboratory to its first 'Outstanding' performance rating by DOE, a dramatic and widely recognized facilities modernization effort, leading-edge science breakthroughs, major achievements in technology commercialization, development of the $1.4 billion neutron research facility for advanced materials and nanoscience applications, and outstanding results in economic development and corporate citizenship. This is a well-deserved promotion for Bill and I strongly believe that, in his new role in Columbus, he will significantly grow our business."
Kohrt also indicated that the University of Tennessee and Battelle have begun a search for Madia's successor at ORNL.
Madia, who began his Battelle career in 1975 as a nuclear chemistry researcher, has held numerous important Battelle leadership positions-including President of Battelle Technology International (which oversaw the Columbus and European Laboratories), General Manager of the Battelle Project Management Division, Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1999, the Federal Laboratory Consortium named Madia its "Laboratory Director of the Year".
"I'm very proud of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's accomplishments during the past few years. ORNL is truly one of the world's foremost research institutions," Madia said. "At the same time, I'm very excited to return to Battelle and look forward to my responsibilities in leading all of Battelle's business with DOE, expanding our laboratory operations business, and commercializing new technologies from throughout the labs that Battelle owns or operates for its clients."
Madia received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Nuclear Chemistry from Virginia Tech. He and his wife, Audrey, have three sons.
