BATTELLE PART OF TEAM WINNING $350 MILLION CONTRACT TO OPERATE NATIONAL DEFENSE CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE

Battelle will play a major role in tackling the national environmental issues associated with operating Defense Department facilities-and potentially other federal sites-with the award of a recent federal contract.

The Department of Defense awarded Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) a five-year-$350 million contract to operate the National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence (NDCEE). To round out CTC's capabilities, Battelle will provide science and technology support to the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal agencies such as NASA, the EPA and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Battelle estimates receiving about $70 million for that work over the course of the five-year contract.

Battelle will open an office in Johnstown, PA, at CTC's headquarters, to support the work at the NDCEE. The center's main focus will be to develop, evaluate and put into use environmental technologies to reduce environmental impacts and costs associated with military operations. Also included in the scope of the center are issues related to environmental security.

"Our role is to be involved from beginning to end in minimizing environmental impact and providing science and technology solutions to these significant environmental challenges," said Bruce Vigon, who is heading up the project for Battelle. "In order to really make an impact, we're involved during the whole process-from concept, through design, fielding, and training to disposal."

Battelle has a history of working with CTC to provide solutions to tough technical issues including:

  • Working with advanced materials to identify coatings for Army vehicles that comply with regulations yet are environmentally friendly.
  • Using sensors to electronically pinpoint the locations of unexploded ordnance to help speed cleanup and avoid potential environmental damage from leaking munition's constituents.
  • Preventive measures that incorporate beacons inside ordnance for ease in future tracking.

Steve Kelly, leader of Battelle's National Security Division, will sit on CTC's Executive Advisory Team for the NDCEE program. "Battelle's broad scientific capabilities, including our reachback to technologies developed by the national labs we're involved with, gives us access to the newest innovations as well as the tried-and-true solutions for these environmental challenges," he said.

Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. It develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for government and commercial customers. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle and the national labs it manages or co-manages have 16,000 staff members and conduct more than $2.7 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations include the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on the compact disc, and medical technology advancements.
