Washington, D.C.- On Monday, October 25, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham awarded Battelle's Dr. William J. Madia with the Department's Gold Award, honoring him for his achievements, contributions, and service to the Department of Energy (DOE). The Gold Award is the DOE's highest honorary award and is given for outstanding leadership and other achievements. It was presented at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. during a symposium honoring former Gold Award winner Dr. Edward Teller.
The Energy Secretary's Gold Award was presented to Madia who has worked for Battelle since 1975. Madia is the former Laboratory Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
"I'm proud to recognize the people whose hard work and dedication contribute so much to the Department of Energy's vital missions," Secretary Abraham said. "Our world-class laboratories are a marvelous resource and have made far-reaching contributions-not only to the Department of Energy, but to our nation and indeed the world. The incredible work done in the laboratories is made possible by the strong, steady, and responsible leadership of these directors."
"I'm honored to receive this award from the Secretary," Madia said. "And, indeed it's my honor to have been chosen to lead two such prestigious laboratories for the Department of Energy. I believe in the DOE's mission and consider it a privilege to have worked with the scientists and researchers doing such important work in advancing science and technology."
While director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) from 2000 to 2003, he oversaw the development of the $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source project, the nation's largest civilian science project, implemented a $300 million campus revitalization program, and rebuilt the scientific infrastructure of the lab.
During his tenure at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland,
Washington from 1994 to 1999, Madia focused PNNL's mission on environmental science and technology, and oversaw development of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory while modernizing the lab's business and administrative systems.
Before leading the national laboratories at Richland and Oak Ridge, Madia managed Battelle's global environmental business, overseeing a portfolio that included developing environmental restoration and waste management technologies, along with environmental systems and planning.
Earlier, as president of Battelle Technology International, Madia led Battelle's research, development, and applications efforts involving more than 4,100 scientists, engineers, and support personnel at major laboratory facilities in Columbus, Ohio; Frankfurt, Germany; and Geneva, Switzerland.
Madia also served as director of Battelle's Columbus Laboratories, managing a staff of 3,200. In each of these positions, he concentrated on moving science and technology out of the laboratory and into applications for society and the marketplace.
Madia was named "Laboratory Director of the Year" in 1999 by the Federal Laboratory Consortium and is the author of a number of journal articles in the fields of radiochemistry and quantum mechanics, as well as technical reports and publications in the field of nuclear technology.
Madia received a B.S. in chemistry from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. in chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Three other recipients of the Secretary's Gold award had Battelle ties including John Marburger, Science Adviser to President George W. Bush and former director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory; Lura Powell, former director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Richard Truly, director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Battelle serves the DOE in the management or co-management of four leading-edge laboratories. Battelle has managed Pacific Northwest National laboratory since 1965, and, through Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC (consisting of Stony Brook University and Battelle) and UT-Battelle, LLC (consisting of the University of Tennessee and Battelle), Battelle operates the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, respectively. With Midwest Research Institute, Battelle co-manages the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for customers. Battelle oversees 16,000 affiliated staff members and conducts more than $3 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations include the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on compact disc technology, medical technology advancements and fiber optic technologies.
