BATTELLE ASSISTS PETROLEUM INDUSTRY IN DEVELOPING GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

WALTHAM, Ma. - Battelle's Environmental Management International group recently completed work for the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA), International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP), and American Petroleum Institute (API) assisting in the development of Petroleum Industry Guidelines for Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Working closely with a committee of industry specialists from API, BP, ChevronTexaco, ExxonMobil, and Shell, and drawing upon internationally accepted practices for greenhouse gas emissions reporting, Battelle drafted the guidance, which underwent extensive review by stakeholders within and outside of the industry before being published.

The Guidelines were developed to promote consistency in the accounting and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions within the petroleum industry. They define accounting and reporting principles for greenhouse gas emissions, procedures for accounting for emissions from the types of jointly owned operations common in the petroleum industry, and approaches to setting the boundaries for greenhouse gas emissions inventories. They also provide guidance on how to track emissions over time on a consistent basis, and discuss the reliability of emission inventories and processes for ensuring the integrity of inventories. The Guidelines are available for download at www.ipieca.org/reporting/ghg.html.
