BATTELLE AND U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY HONORED WITH NATIONAL AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Battelle has received the prestigious White House Closing the Circle Award recognizing outstanding environmental management systems at the laboratories it operates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Battelle manages the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and co-manages the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in a partnership with the University of Tennessee and the Brookhaven National Laboratory with Stony Brook University.

The award is given by the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive and recognizes outstanding environmental stewardship through pollution prevention, recycling, green purchasing, sustainable building, and the use of environmental management systems. Only 12 winners were named from a pool of 200 applicants.

Battelle Laboratory Operations was specifically recognized for showing commitment to environmental stewardship and implementation of enhanced environmental management systems at Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Brookhaven labs.

"We're honored to be selected as a winner of this award and I congratulate all our staff members who have made this happen," said Bill Madia, Battelle Executive Vice President for Laboratory Operations. "We are highly committed to operating laboratories in an environmentally responsible manner. Operational excellence is a cornerstone of our lab management philosophy, and is the right thing to do."

DOE's Office of Science also named Battelle the "Best in Class" for a Pollution Prevention Award, which led to the nomination for the White House Award.

Representatives from Battelle will travel to Washington, D.C., to accept the award at a July 15 ceremony in the White House Presidential Hall of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
