COLUMBUS, Ohio-Battelle was recently awarded a five-year contract valued at $33 million to provide maintenance and repair support for the U.S. government's worldwide family of biodetection systems.
Battelle, as a subcontractor to AAI Corporation, will provide contractor logistics support as part of a larger valued $160 million contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense to Engineering Support Inc. (a subsidiary of AAI).
The contract specifies that Battelle will provide services for all biodetection devices currently fielded-as well as units expected to be fielded in upcoming years-by the joint services, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and other government organizations. Those logistics services include:
The government currently has hundreds of systems in use to protect against potential biological threats. Those systems include the Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS), a system designed and built by Battelle and General Dynamics, and others like the Joint Portal Shield Detection Systems.
"Battelle's key role will be to provide training for the 200 or more maintenance and operations staff around the world and to help develop and build test equipment that will be easily deployable," said Jeff Hodge, Battelle Program Manager. "We'll leverage knowledge gained in the production of the JBPDS and other programs so we can assist AAI ESI and the government in achieving a cost-effective support program until the time that the military becomes capable of undertaking these duties."
About 50 Battelle staff members will be involved in the training and other efforts.
"Battelle's expertise in biodetection runs the full spectrum," said Steve Kelly, Senior VP for the National Security Division. "We are not only at the forefront of advanced research and development in biological threat detection systems-this contract puts us in the position of being the logistics experts."
Battelle recently won a $2.2 million contract to support prime contractor Science & Engineering Services (SESI), for work on the Joint Biological Standoff Detection System (JBSDS). Under this contract, Battelle will provide logistics support, technical training and safety analysis to support the standoff biodetection system. It's then expected to be added to the Battelle contract for contractor support services.
The point and standoff detection systems work in a coordinated way to detect the presence of biological agents.
The standoff system (JBSDS) will operate at a fixed site or from a stationary position on a mobile platform, such as a HMMWV. The point detection system (JBPDS) identifies biological agents in the air at very low levels. Working together, the standoff system identifies potential threats from a distance and alerts troops to take protective measures.
